Chilean apple crops are forecast to increase by 9% over last year, topping 33.5 million cartons.
Most significant, however, is the growth of bi-coloured varieties which are taking over from the more traditional crops of red apples.
Royal Gala crops are still increasing, up 11% on the 9 million cartons grown last year, while there is increasing interest in Brookfield and Galaxy clones. Fuji has risen from 1.6 million to 2.3 million cartons in the same period.
Pink Lady apples are up from 117,000 cartons to 742,000 cartons while Granny Smiths show an increase to 6 million while Red Delicious are stable.
