Three European bodies have written to the European Commission to criticise proposals to allow imported US "chlorinated chicken".

In a joint letter sent by the European Consumers' Organisation, producer group COPA-COGECA and the European Environmental Bureau this week, the group warned any change to existing pathogen control measures could "undermine consumers' confidence in poultry meat".

The row erupted after the EC announced earlier this year that it would consider lifting the current ban on the import of US poultry meat that has been treated with antimicrobial substances.
