Spanish oranges and easy peelers grown in the Valencia region will benefit from a new regional brand next season to differentiate from other production areas. As one of the major production areas in the world, it has won approval from the national government for a system called Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) allowing fruit to be identified as Citricos Valencianos. This brand will be the basis of export trials to major markets next autumn and conferences with distributors and retailers have already been planned. The UK will benefit in two years' time. Valencia grows 71% of the national crop, of which 60% is exported. In 1998/99 Spain shipped out 2.7 million tonnes of fruit including lemons and grapefruit or just over half of the entire Mediterranean crop. Current season production figures indicate Valencia is still expanding from 3.4 million tonnes. Latest figures show Spanish exports to the UK should pass last year's 220,000t by at least 21,000t. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
