Moves to PLU harmony An International Federation for Produce Coding to standardise PLU codes is expected to be in place by spring next year. While PLUs are used to identify fruit at checkouts, historically supermarkets have chosen their own numbers. The standardisation initiative began in the United States last month and has already gained worldwide support because it is seen as both a practical and cost-effective solution for both retailers and packers. Douglas Henderson, chief executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium, who has been designated chairman of a new working group, said: "The agreement is a gift for this industry." {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
