The price of robusta beans, which are used to make instant coffee, has increased by 11% since the end of July, reaching $1,477 a tonne in London yesterday.

Néstor Osorio, executive director of the International Coffee Organisation, said: “We are going through a year in which there is a balance between consumption and production for the first time in many years.”
