The price of iceberg lettuce has plummeted thanks to good supply from Spain. Prices are currently down 11.8% on last month and down 51.3% year on year. However, there are some potential clouds on the horizon: warmer weather this year has brought the harvest forward, sparking concerns about potential supply shortages later in the season.
Good weather in Spain - as well as the Canary Islands - is also helping to push down tomato prices. Tomatoes from the Netherlands are also coming into season, further lowering prices.
Carrot prices remain down thanks to continuing strong supply from the winter season, which has kept well in storage. And EU potato prices are down nearly 50% year on year thanks to an increase in supply: production in the five major growing regions in the EU is up 4% year on year, to 23.9 million tonnes, with plantings for 2014/15 also progressing strongly.
