The National Federation of Retail Newsagents has called on MPs to support the independent sector.

Unveiling its 2015 manifesto this week, the NFRN called for a clampdown on shoplifters, tougher penalties for those involved in smuggling or selling counterfeit tobacco and alcohol, and a full review of the news supply chain.

It also wants greater recognition of the impact of the National Minimum Wage, minimum unit pricing for alcohol and for small retailers to be included in the carrier bag levy in England.

“With the General Election on the horizon, there is an opportunity for policymakers to demonstrate their commitment to the independent retail sector,” said NFRN president Martyn Brown.
