Spar wholesaler AF Blakemore has opened a £750,000 waste sorting centre to reduce the waste its members send to landfill. The Willenhall site, in which cardboard and plastic are baled for recycling, is expected to make a loss of £100,000 to £150,000 in its first year and break even the following year.

“Our trucks were returning empty from deliveries, so it makes sense for us to provide a service to our members by picking up their waste and dealing with it in an environmentally friendly way,” said Blakemore Distribution MD Dennis Evans.
