Budgens has recruited United Co-op's Barry Williams as senior trading controller handling ambient categories, including non-foods and alcohol.
He reports to trading director Cliff Goodman and manages a team of nine buyers.
Williams was previously head of buying and range management at United Co-op, with responsibility for £750m worth of business across all categories.
He has worked in the food industry for 14 years, after joining Kwik Save at the age of 18 and working his way up the buying ranks in his 10 years with the discounter.
Goodman said: "Our strategy is to develop our convenience store format and presence and, with his experience of ambient categories and the c-store sector, Barry will play a key role in this highly competitive environment."
