Independent retailers in Northern Ireland are seeking to block a proposed large Asda store at a shopping centre near Antrim.

The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association claimed the 54,000 sq ft store was in breach of the province's planning policy and would accelerate retail decline.

"This store will prevent any serious prospect of retail regeneration of the town centre," said NIIRTA CEO Glyn Roberts.

Asda claimed the store would create 400 jobs, but NIIRTA disputed this, saying it would result in a net loss of 270 jobs from local retailers and suppliers.
