Sainsbury has opened its 400th convenience store – and controversially insisted its Local outlets are good for rival retailers on the British high street.

“We keep money in the community,” Sainsbury’s convenience director Helen Buck said of the Local stores. “We give another reason for shoppers to stay in their local area.”

She made the comments as Sainsbury’s opened the landmark Local store in Wolverhampton.

Meanwhile, high-profile former finance director Darren Shapland has returned to Carpetright as a non-executive director.

Shapland, who was touted as a possible successor to Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King prior to his exit from the supermarket earlier this year, was finance director at Carpetright until joining the supermarket in 2005.
