The final chapter has closed in the short history of Asco Stores.

The ill-fated chain opened its sole store in Warrington last December but went under just five months later.

Its fascia will be replaced by Poundland, which is to open a new store on the site next week. The store, to be opened by Shameless actress Tina Malone, will create 30 jobs in the town.

Asco vowed to offer "a real alternative" to the major supermarkets but was beset by problems and was wound up in May after a petition for £25,621 was lodged against it by the Evolve Group.
