Today's kids know their Harry Potters from their Twilights but don't have a clue about the classics, Asda said this week as it introduced hundreds of classics to its stores as part of its Big Read campaign.

The retailer revealed research showing just 16% of primary school children knew Moby Dick was a whale, while 40% thought he was a popstar and 40% an explorer. Although 69% could identify Fagin as the villain in Oliver Twist, 17% thought he was a Manchester United footballer and only 3% had read Lord of the Flies.
