Asda is pumping £8.5m into its speciality divisions this year to fund an aggressive growth programme in jewellery, photo labs and optical centres.
By the end of the year, Asda will have jewellery departments in three-quarters of its stores, optical centres in almost a third and photo labs in just under half of its estate.
Self-select jewellery units in other stores would mean that 257 of Asda’s 265 stores will ultimately have a jewellery offer, said business unit director for speciality, David Miles.
Prices for jewellery range from 97p for fashion jewellery items to £779.99 for a diamond engagement ring.
The roll-out of instore pharmacies was on hold pending the outcome of a government investigation into the way pharmacy dispensing licences were granted, said a spokesman.
