Asda has appointed Clive West as Stores in the Community director to implement an integrated strategy for local community involvement.
He will be responsible for managing a four-strong local sourcing team, a six-strong local marketing team, plus two people responsible for its Stores in the Community programme.
West said his long-term strategy would include visiting Asda stores overseas as well as other international hypermarkets to learn best practice for local sourcing.
He added: "This is a fantastic opportunity and a sign from the executive board of the importance they place on the development of individual local stores."
West will also be responsible for Asda's Stores in the Community strategy, which was launched a year ago. The scheme encourages employees to help their store's neighbourhood through fundraising events and community projects.
He began his career at Sainsbury and became a store manager in 1993. He managed three Sainsbury's stores and took up a store managership with Asda in January 1997. He became a regional marketing manager for Asda in 2000 and then regional marketing coach for buyers in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire in 2001.
He moved to Asda's head office in Leeds as head of local marketing for the UK before taking on his latest role.
