Wal-Mart has announced that in the UK Asda sales grew in the high single digits for both the second quarter and the first half of the financial year.

Second quarter like-for-like food sales were in the mid-single digits while general merchandise and clothing sales grew in the high single digits.

Asda has opened one new Supercenter, a superstore, two new George stand-alone stores and five expanded superstores so far this year.

For the year it plans to open 10 new food stores, including the recently announced acquisitions of two stores from Somerfield, 22 expansions, and three George stand-alone stores. It is also planning to reach a total of 19 Supercenters in the UK by the end of the year.

The company also announced its home shopping service will be rolling out to a further 21 stores from next week, taking national coverage to 40% of the UK.

Wal-Mart continues to hold the title of the world’s largest company, and since Asda joined its portfolio five years ago the UK retailer’s market share has increased from 8.2% to 11%
