Sales of Asda’s George branded schoolwear has overtaken those of Marks and Spencer during the six months to August.

The back-to-school market is worth £900m a year, of which Asda had a 12% share for the 24 weeks to August 25, M&S 9.1% and Tesco 4.3%.

The Times reported that M&S has seen its school clothing sales fall 6% during the period.
