Asda and Tesco have snapped up a clutch of Big W variety stores from Woolworths after the retailer put them up for auction.
Neither party has disclosed how much was paid for the stores, the only ones in the Big W estate with planning permission for food retailing, but they are rumoured to have spent as much as £50m per store.
Asda has bought two stores in Aberdeen and Bolton, which will reopen as Asda superstores in April and May respectively.
Tesco has bought the Redruth Big W and is in discussions about a further three sites, according to a spokesman.
