Asda plans to create an extra 2,250 shop floor jobs, just a week after it revealed plans to shed 1,400 positions.

The supermarket group said that each of its 279 stores would recruit eight extra staff in customer-facing roles.

Asda’s people director, David Smith, said: “It would have been insensitive last week to talk about job creation when some of our colleagues were facing uncertainty about their roles.”

“Our intention is to redeploy as many of them as possible whilst continuing to create new jobs like these in all our stores.”

Last week Asda said that a total of 200 roles would go at its Leeds head office, while 1,200 workers, mainly in management positions, will be lost from stores.
