Asda is looking to strengthen its management team in an effort to gain market share on rival Tesco.

Media reports suggest that Asda chief executive Andy Bond may call back former Asda logistics director David Cheesewright who is currently chief operating officer for Wal-Mart Canada.

The speculation has surfaced on the back of data from TNS Superpanel which found that the UK’s number three supermarket Sainsbury was closing the gap on Asda’s number two position.

In the 12 weeks to May 22, Sainsbury increased its market share to 15.9% from 15.5% last year, while Asda’s market share slipped from 16.6% to 16.5% for the period.

However, both supermarkets lag behind Tesco which increased its market share from 27.6% to 29.9% for the period.
