Marks and Spencer has made Alice Avis director of marketing and e-commerce to drive the continued recovery of the brand.
Avis replaces Alan McWalter, who left in July 2002.
She will report directly to chief executive Roger Holmes and will sit on the group operating committee.
She previously ran her own strategic marketing consultancy. Before that she was marketing director for e-commerce business Flutter.com and prior to that was global brand director for Johnnie Walker at Diageo, where she succeeded in reversing the brand's declining sales and renewing its image.
Avis will be responsible for building on M&S' success in turning around its clothing sales and will also be responsible for boosting food sales, which have consistently grown in the last few years.
She said: "I am looking forward to joining the company at such an exciting time for the company."
