Holland & Barrett CEO Peter Aldis has slammed rivals for failing to wage war on plastic bag use.

Aldis urged others to follow Holland & Barrett's lead and ban plastic bags from stores completely.

The health food chain claims to have saved 11 million plastic bags after banning bags from its 600 stores a year ago.

"Many retailers introduced half measures such as charging for plastic bags," said Aldis. "But no-one else stepped up to the mark and banned plastic bags all together. We are proud to be the first to take this step and have proven it can be done."
