Bestway is to open a cash & carry in Brighton next month, ending a four-year search for a depot there.

The £5m, 85,000 sq ft C&C is on the site of a former book trade warehouse and will have fresh departments and a butchery. It will create over 70 jobs.

"Bestway has been trying for some time to find an appropriate site in Brighton and we are delighted to now have the opportunity to trade in the city," said MD Younus Sheikh. "We are looking forward to bringing our offering to independent retailers and foodservice customers in this region to help them build their business with the provision of some of the very best value prices and availability."

Meanwhile, Palmer & Harvey has announced plans to open its 14th distribution centre. The 168,000 sq ft site, in Hemel Hempstead, will open next spring in response to increased demand in the South East and London.

"This is a really exciting development for P&H, providing a significant improvement to our infrastructure and giving us the opportunity to significantly grow our sales and customer base in the strategically important South East," said operations MD Julian Street.
