Bestway is understood to be in talks with CJ Lang about buying its foodservice and C&C division.

Bestway bought Scottish wholesaler Bellevue in June and is now considering expanding further.

CJ Lang's Spar distribution business was not for sale, said industry sources, but it would consider selling its foodservice and Martex C&C divisions.

"Bestway is looking to expand in Scotland, so buying some of CJ Lang's depots would make sense," one insider told The Grocer. The move would allow CJ Lang to concentrate on its Spar business, added another source. "It will all depend on whether the price is right," she said. "Bestway are an honourable bunch but are not going to pay through the nose."

Bestway CEO Zameer Choudrey declined to comment but before the potential deal with CJ Lang's came to light, he told The Grocer that Bestway's acquisition plans had not stopped with Bellevue.

"We are still looking at acquisitions and we are still out there," he said.

Bestway currently owns four depots in Scotland, two under its Batleys brand in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and the recently acquired sites in Edinburgh and Stirling. CJ Lang, which also refused to comment, has C&Cs in Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen.
