Morrisons is exploring the potential of using 60-80 tonne monster trucks following government moves to relax weight restrictions on the roads.
Currently, there is a 44-tonne limit on lorries, but the government is considering allowing heavier trucks in a bid to reduce vehicle numbers.
The mega-trucks, which already operate on the Continent, allow companies to shift more stock on fewer vehicles. Morrisions said the trucks would be better for the environment, reduce congestion and tackle driver shortages.
Suppliers of bulky but light goods such as breakfast cereals or crisps were interested in larger vehicles because of the extra capacity, said the Freight Transport Association.
