The first pub to branch out into convenience retailing with Spar will open in the New Year in Lincoln. Spar has also begun discussions with a second pub in the area. Midlands Spar wholesaler AF Blakemore placed ads in several regional newspapers in its trading area last month calling for pubs and other rural businesses to join Spar. Retail director Elwyn Davies said he had already received between 15 and 20 enquiries, a handful of which are being followed up seriously. The scheme is marketed as part of the rural regeneration campaign spearheaded by the Prince of Wales, but there is no reason why pubs in urban locations shouldn't join Spar, said Davies. {{NEWS }}
