Tesco founder Sir Jack Cohen, who died in 1979, has been commemorated with an English Heritage plaque at 91 Ashfield Street, Whitechapel, London, where he lived as a child.

Current Tesco CEO Sir Terry Leahy unveiled the plaque in the same week Tesco revealed record profits of £3bn. He described Cohen as "an impressive man allied with a strong work ethic and a healthy dose of optimism".

"I'd like to think some of Jack Cohen's entrepreneurial spirit lives on in Tesco today," he said.
