The next Scottish Grocers' Federation president Jim Botterill is to remind suppliers that independent stores are an essential ingredient of a healthy marketplace in his inaugural address. Spar retailer Botterill becomes president of the SGF at its conference next weekend, replacing Dougie Edgar. He said: "Independents offer variety on your doorstep, and create healthy competition for the multiples. Having no independents will benefit no-one. Suppliers do not want to be left with just five supermarket customers." Botterill will call for independents to be protected from legislation to raise the minimum wage, which will squeeze margins already under pressure from the multiples. He is also on the offensive over bootlegging, licensing restrictions and red tape. {{NEWS }}
