Waitrose is running instore tastings of brassica varieties.
Selected stores have been tempting customers with green cabbage, dwarf Romanesque and Calavo Negro and are now switching to January King cabbage, Spanish broccoli and Cornish cauliflower.
January King is recognisable by its flatter shape and the reddish/purple hue of the outer leaves. Ian Maugan, category manager at grower/packer W Bailey, which is conducting the tastings, said: "It tasted so good it took the UK by storm in the 30s, supplanting Savoy."
