British cucumbers grown for the festive season will be on sale for the first time at Christmas.

Marks and Spencer will be selling the British cucumbers grown at Stockbridge Technology Centre near York, using energy-efficient sodium lights for 18 hours a day.

Currently, festive season cucumbers are mostly produced in Spain.

NFU vice president Michael Paske said: “We want to see supermarkets putting more home-grown rather than imported produce on the shelves…

“We are pleased that supermarkets are increasingly receptive to this kind of initiative.”

According to the NFU, 80% of all households buy the salad vegetable.
