A second UK packaging factory in as many months has been devastated by fire.

Alexir Partnership which makes packaging for leading retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury's and M&S, as well as manufacturers such as Premier Foods, Unilever and Tate & Lyle said that it was working round the clock to ensure there was no disruption to supplies after its main plant in Crawley, West Sussex, was razed to the ground last week.

The company said the fire had destroyed the 27,000 sq ft plant and that production was being switched to third-party manufacturers as well as its other facilities one in nearby Uckfield and a secondary, raw materials site in Crawley.

It was confident of "minimal" disruption to customers. "We have fully functioning offices within our offsite storage facility, full IT recovery is in place and we can service all our customers as usual," said chairman Robert Davison.

Meanwhile, United Biscuits is still fighting to restore distribution of a number of own-label lines following a blaze at packaging supplier Amcor Flexibles almost two months ago.

United Biscuits said 200 lines had already been restored.
