The number of convenience stores is increasing, a report submitted to the Competition Commission has claimed.

The report, commissioned by Tesco and conducted by the University of Southampton, claims that the number of c-stores in 1,092 shopping areas increased by 629 between 2000 and 2006 - with small independent retailers accounting for the majority of the growth, according to reports in the Daily Telegraph.

Previous studies have underestimated the number of c-stores because they have been wrongly classified, the reports adds.
