Sainsbury's has fitted 11 of its London stores with electric car charging points that will be free for customers to use.
The charge points are spread throughout the capital, said Sainsbury's commercial director Neil Sachdev, adding that he hoped the initiative would encourage more customers to use electric vehicles.
"In 10 years time we envisage that recharge points will be available at all of our stores in large cities," he said.
London Mayor Boris Johnson welcomed the announcement.
