Somerfield stores are set to start vanishing from high streets later this month.

The Co-operative Group will begin converting the 700-odd stores from next week, starting with a Somerfield in Tonypandy, Glamorgan. The first batch from the acquisition will comprise nine stores in total, including one in Bristol where Somerfield's HQ is based.

The stores had been prioritised because they were in catchments where the society had sold an existing The Co-op Group store to another grocery retailer, a spokeswoman said.
