The Co-operative Group has been crowned the best supermarket chain for making strides in improving the health of its customers.

The National Consumer Council’s Health Responsibility Index, which compares company performance and highlights good practice, praised the Co-op for its customer-friendly nutrition labelling, its salt score and its helpline.

In contrast, Tesco limped home in sixth place out of nine retailers, while Morrisons was placed bottom of the pile.
