United Co-operatives is trialling bio-diesel in its trucks.

From this month trucks leaving its 24-hour distribution depots at Bradford and Stoke-on-Trent will be powered by bio-diesel produced from recycled vegetable oil blended with low sulphur diesel. The experiment will run for 12 weeks.

United Co-operatives said if it was successful it would consider increasing the proportion of recycled vegetable oil in the blend from 5% to 20%.

"This scheme reinforces our commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions from our transport operations," said general manager for environment and technical services Keith Maloney.?
