Woolworths has said its concessions in Somerfield stores will continue despite The Co-operative Group’s £1.57bn acquisition of the supermarket chain.

The tie-up began in April, allowing Somerfield to trial convenience-focused food in three Woolworths stores and Woolworths to sell its value Worthit! range in 12 Somerfield stores.

“Plans are in place for more stores and we are in discussions with Somerfield to develop these,” said a Woolworths spokesman.

Last week, Woolworths said it planned to focus on small and medium-sized stores in a bid to revive sales, which had slumped 3.1% in the 25 weeks to 26 July.
