Like-for-like food sales at Anglia Co-operative rose 3.3% in the six months to 20 February.

The society, which has 29 food stores across East Anglia, said sales were boosted by the stores that had been changed to The Co-operative fascia.

Increased fresh food sales would improve margins, it added. Anglia cut its borrowings from £62m to £35m over the period, leaving it "better equipped to service debt, provide for long-term liabilities and deliver growth".

A new food store, in Littleport, Cambridgeshire, is scheduled to open in November.
