The containers have frozen, chilled and ambient compartments to receive grocery deliveries when the householder is out.
Produced by Shopbox Systems, they are large enough to take a standard supermarket trolley-load of shopping and can be locked once the groceries are delivered.
Shopbox will be on display at Sainsbury’s Cobham and Farnham stores this month.
Customers can rent boxes for £4.95 a week or buy them for £499.
Shopbox commercial director Peter Dumigan said: “Shopbox
allows the supermarket to deliver at its convenience on the day requested by the customer.
“We believe this will lead to cost savings on deliveries through improved routing.”
He said at least 40% could be saved on the current delivery cost per customer.
