Tesco's share of the grocery-only market has marginally slipped from 28.5% to 28.4% in the past quarter, despite its total market share soaring ahead at 29.3%, according to exclusive research for The Grocer by ACNielsen.
Sainsbury's share of grocery, where it holds the number two position ahead of Asda, also slipped 1.9% over the period to 15.5%, while Asda's remained at 14%. Somerfield experienced the biggest growth in grocery share, up 4.7% to 4.5%.
Looking at the total market, Asda maintained its lead over Sainsbury's, with its share up 5.5% on last year to 15.4%. Sainsbury's share rose 7.6% to 14.5%.
Within categories, fresh foods have been growing in the high single digits for the four weeks to 7 October, with fruit and veg experiencing the highest gains, up 13.5%. Frozen food sales grew by 0.1%.
