Port is no longer a man’s drink, according to research commissioned by Sainsbury, which indicates that 46% of port drinkers are female.

Market analysts AC Nielson, who conducted the research for the supermarket retailer, also found that the drink’s popularity is strong for the under 35 age group, which accounts for 25% of consumption.

In addition it found that overall sales are up by 46% since 1992. Retailers are also selling 74% more premium port than they did a year ago.
