Mike Coupe has been promoted to the executive board of Sainsbury's.

Coupe, who has been trading director on the operating board since 1994, will take up his executive role in August.

"My main duties and responsibilities won't change but I will get involved at plc level to represent my trading function and give Darren (Shapland, chief financial officer) and Justin (King, chief executive) support on the operations side," he said.

Coupe was previously MD of Iceland and trading director at Asda and Tesco.

Mary Harris has been appointed non-executive director. She was previously a partner at management consultancy McKinsey.
