Tesco is accepting Sainsbury and Safeway money-off coupons for the "time being" after claiming its rivals were sending Tesco customers mail shots with money-off vouchers. Tesco said customers who received the coupons had asked whether they could use them in Tesco stores. As part of its Every Little Helps strategy, it had decided to accept the coupons and had set up its scanners at the checkouts to recognise the barcodes. "This is the latest spat where more expensive supermarkets try to lure our customers away," said Tesco marketing director Tim Mason. Safeway said it was flattered Tesco was threatened by its vouchers. "This PR stunt by Tesco will not redeem many of our coupons because we have very little of this activity, as we concentrate on deals in store," said a Safeway spokeswoman. Sainsbury described Tesco's decision as a "desperate move", adding: "Obviously Tesco is panicking about our Nectar card." {{NEWS }}
