CJ Lang has eliminated the need for shrink-wrap in its Spar distribution centre, saving 30 tonnes of plastic a year from being sent to landfill.

Previously the wholesaler used shrink-wrap to secure goods in the 8,000 roll cages used to deliver to its 380 Spar retailers.

But it has now fitted the cages with heavy curtains that stop the products from falling out.

"We were using about 10 metres of shrink-wrap on every roll cage and a sizeable proportion of this probably ended up in landfill," said business development controller Philippe Rondepierre.

"While we recycle plastic in our depots, we cannot be sure that retailers were doing this and it wasn't practical to bring it back to the depot. This is a scheme that's good for the environment and there's a cost saving in this for us too."
