Sales at discount supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl have soared in the past year as consumers tighten their belts.

Latest grocery market share data from TNS found Aldi posted year-on-year sales growth of 18.9% for the 12 weeks to 18 May, with growth of 9.6% at Lidl and 4% at Netto.

“The German-owned Aldi has been investing heavily in new stores and has increased levels of advertising and this investment is being rewarded with strong growth in the current climate,” said Edward Garner, director of research at TNS Worldpanel.
