Dunnes has upped the ante in the price war with Tesco in the Irish Republic with a new round of price cuts, prompting calls for a fresh investigation into alleged breaches of the Groceries Order.
Dunnes and Tesco are already being investigated by the director for consumer affairs in Dublin over alleged breaches of the order (which bans below cost selling) with a one-day promotion on babyfood earlier this month. Dunnes’ latest promotion, offering 61% off frozen foods, suggests it is either “grossly profiteering” from these lines or selling them below cost price, said Irish independents lobby group RGDATA.
Director general Ailish Forde said: “This is typical of the type of predatory activity that has seen the multiples destroy local competition in many urban areas.”
