The Norfolk town of Sheringham has come a step closer to creating the UK’s greenest supermarket after district councillors blocked plans for a Tesco store in the town.

Opponents of Tesco’s longstanding proposal put forward as an alternative the Greenhouse Country Store – intended to be the most eco-friendly supermarket ever built.

Waitrose would run the store, which was proposed by local farmer Clive Hay-Smith.

“Planning officers made it clear that the Waitrose application would be detrimental to Sheringham town centre and local shops,” a Tesco spokesman told the Times.

“The council itself has announced that it will be seeking further independent legal advice on the legality of the decision.”
