Safeway has made Nicola Ellen strategy manager, corporate social responsibility, to enforce the aims of its corporate social responsibility report, published in February 2002. Ellen will address issues such as Safeway's sourcing policies and community relations. She began her career in the glass container industry, working for companies including Rockware Glass. She became deputy chairman of the British Retail Consortium environment policy advisory group in 1998, rising to chairman in 2001. Ellen joined Safeway in 1991 and has held a number of positions with a strong focus on environmental strategy. Overall responsibility for csr rests with Safeway board supply director Lawrence Christensen. Ellen commented: "Corporate social responsibility is such a broad church, the challenge will be deciding which objectives best match Safeway's commercial interests and can be effectively delivered to stakeholders." She said she would aim to identify key environmental performance targets for Safeway over the next year and look at developing the multiple's relations with the local community: "I want to communicate to people that Safeway is committed to social and environmental change and improvement." {{PEOPLE MOVES }}
