Budgens has broken into the north of England with its first store in York.

The retailer has almost 230 branches in the south and in the Midlands, with its most northerly store located in Nottinghamshire. A second store in Yorkshire is planned in Sheffield and will open next month.

Chief executive Martin Hyson said: “Seven more Budgens corporate stores are planned for this year, while Budgens Local is targeting between 15 and 18 new partners across the UK.

“Depending on how well York and Sheffield perform, Budgens could well be looking for further expansion in Yorkshire and, logistically, the company is well placed to service both corporate and Local stores there.”
