Waitrose will make its c-store debut this December, in Nottingham. The new 5,815 sq ft store, which is significantly bigger than the traditional c-store of up to 3,000 sq ft, will be located opposite John Lewis and will be the first of three trial stores scheduled to open by next spring. The locations of the other two are still to be decided, but they will be between 5,000 sq ft and 7,000sq ft. The move is part of Waitrose’s strategy to double the size of its 192-store business by 2017.

“You shouldn’t have to compromise on the standard of your shopping experience just because a store is smaller and designed for convenience,” said Mark Price, Waitrose MD. “There will be service counters and fresh foods unparalleled in convenience.” The retailer is also trialling a Market Town format for shops 0f 10,000 sq ft-15,000 sq ft.
